Clayton: Shopping & Dining

Shopping

In small towns, there is often a catch-all variety store that serves a panoply of needs, and in Clayton, that store is Duckwalls (115 Main). You’ll find everything from snacks to patio furniture inside. Mary’s Flowers and Gifts (200 Main) follows a similar theme, only with a feminine touch, featuring items from foot scrubs and incense to flowers. Home goods are the specialty of Petals (106 Main), with dishware, bath items, and kitchen needs all featured, and Western Treasures (10 Main) selection of memorabilia will satisfy the casual cowboy. Ladies looking for great finds can stop at Espe’s Three West (9 Main) to find name labels and thoughtful gift items. Next door, Clayton gets its cold remedies at City Drug. Finally, to prove the grit of the Old West spirit is still alive in Clayton, there is Lawrence’s Boot and Saddle (120 Main). From spurs to saddles, Lawrence’s might not be for the day trippers, but the store is a central part of the rugged lifestyle of rural living.

Dining

All-American and New Mexican fare draws locals to the Rabbit Ear Cafe (402 N. 1st 575-374-3277), where residents start their day with the Café’s hearty breakfasts.
Across from the Luna Theater, the Crossroads Coffee Mill (2 Front St., 575-374-5282) grinds up coffee and serves up pastries.
