History
Farmington rests at the confluence of 3 riversFor nearly 2,000 years, Farmington has been home to various Native American tribes, including the Navajo, Jicarilla Apache, Ute, and Hopi nations. The town itself did not begin to develop until the 1870’s, when settlers congregated at the confluence of the Animas, La Plata and San Juan Rivers. The rich farm and ranch land gave birth to the town’s first moniker, “Farmingtown”. By 1901, the “w” was dropped, and Farmington was incorporated. At the turn of the century and into the early 1900’s, apples were a staple crop of area farmers. But, oil and gas were to be the economic staples of the area. Natural gas was found in 1921, and oil followed in 1922, with the first commercial oil well in New Mexico established in September of that year. Although Farmington is no longer the leading oil and gas producer in the state, the industry remains an essential part of the cities economy.
