Hobbs: Homegrown MainStreet Success
Tidwell Art ParkTidwell Art Park (corner of Turner and Taylor) is a quirky little project that is turning a drive-thru bank into an artspace. This walking park is ingeniously designed to feature art displays in the windows where the drive-thru tellers would sit.
Economically, two new additions to MainStreet are helping spur business. Dedicated to making downtown work, Hobbs moved City Hall (200 E. Broadway) and its 300 employees to MainStreet in January 2008. Additionally, Western Commerce Bank (209 W. Taylor) spent $800,000 to renovate and move into their new building on MainStreet in early 2009. The result is more people downtown for work and business, translating into more customers for restaurants and shops, helping to encourage sustainable MainStreet growth.
History
James Hobbs and his family were on their way to Alpine, Texas in 1907 via covered wagon when eastward travelers told them there were no jobs in Alpine. Hobbs turned his family north and settled, opening a school, post office, and creating a small farming community. When oil was struck in 1928, Hobbs exploded into 3 cities totaling 12,000 residents. In 1937, the 3 cities Hobbs, All Hobbs and New Hobbs united under one name.
