Shopping

Who doesn’t need a full size blow-up purple alien? Roswell has become a destination for the curious UFO-files who flock to the town for events and visits. There are a growing number of “alien themed” shops opening to service their needs, including Planet Roswell (204 N. Main), Cosmic Jukebox (216 N. Main) and Roswell Landing (205 N. Main).

If you are an antiques buff or collector, don’t miss the Roswell Antiques Mall (208 N. Main) or Salt Creek Mercantile (125 N. Main).

Ladies may find the perfect handbag at She’s So Unique (127 N. Main), unique jewelry at Barringer’s (314 N. Main) or a quilt for a loved one at Calico Cow Quilt Shop (331 N. Main).

The Pecos Flavors Winery (305 N. Main) has an excellent selection of New Mexico wines, beers, gifts and products. Tastings are conducted all day, so stop by and talk shop with their knowledgeable staff over a glass wine and a cheese tray or belly up to the 100+ year old bar for a New Mexico brew.

Dining

For a belly full of local New Mexican-food flavor, Martin’s (110 West 4th) is the local’s choice for enchiladas (green or red!) and Blue Corn tortillas.

Not Of This World Coffee House (707 La Jolla Ln., 505-627-0077) is a great place to start your day with a steaming mocha and a muffin. The Coffee House also has sodas, sandwiches, pastries, desserts and live music.

Consistently good, traditional fare can always be had at Cattle Baron Steak & Seafood Restaurant (1113 N. Main Street, 575-662-2465). The bar is fun and, like Pasta Cafe, full of locals enjoying themselves. A great atmosphere!

An Italian friend once told me that the smell of garlic outside an Italian restaurant was a good sign – essential really. Let your nose take you to the Pasta Cafe Italian Bistro(1208 N. Main, 575-624-1111),for superb food and a very nice wine selection. The staff is friendly, the lighting is perfect, and the bar, which is in the center of the restaurant, was filled with laughing locals. Think “Cheers”- with cowboy boots!
